DETROIT, Updated 2:58 p.m. EDT July 16, 2000-- Race track developers used sound testing Saturday afternoon in an attempt to show residents in homes adjacent to the State Fairgrounds that bringing racing to the area would not generate excessive noise.
Officials are waiting for results of the tests. They are expected to be done by Tuesday.
More than 20 cars were run simultaneously in several areas around the fairgrounds to simulate the noise created by race cars. The noise level was measured electronically in five separate locations in surrounding neighborhoods.
The complex is locate at Eight Mile Road and Woodward Avenue.
Macomb County Commission Chairman John Hertel, who also serves as director of the fair, said he is confident that the results will prove to critics that the development will not disrupt life in the area.
State Fair Development Group LLC, headed by Joseph Z. Nederlander, is trying to move forward with a plan to develop a track, amphitheater and other entertainment facilities on the site.
Two of Detroit's most exclusive neighborhoods, Sherwood Forest and Palmer Woods, border the site. And homeowners are opposed to the development.
Opposition has come from Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge and Huntington Woods, suburbs that sit north of Detroit's Eight Mile border. The cities have joined Detroit in a lawsuit against the developers.
