DETROIT, Updated 10:26 p.m. EDT July 20, 2000-- Developers said Thursday that racing at the State Fairgrounds would not disturb surrounding neighborhoods despite arguments by area residents.
The results of sound tests conducted Saturday show that little noise would waft through the backyards and streets in homes adjacent to the site where a development group wants to build an auto race track and entertainment center.
Macomb County Commission Chairman John Hertel, who also runs the State Fair, said that 35 of the 40 sound readings taken Saturday produced noise that was barely audible or inaudible in neighborhoods around the site.
Race cars were brought to the grounds and their engines were revved to simulate an actual race. Testers took readings from nearby streets.
Detroit, Huntington Woods and Ferndale are suing the developers to derail their plans for putting a race track at the fairgrounds.
