News 4's safety expert Isaiah McKinnon, former Detroit police chief, offers some tips on how to make sure your kids can get to and from school safely.
McKinnon suggests telling your kids to walk in a group and not to talk to strangers. He also reminds kids to avoid abandoned houses.
If your kids get into some sort of trouble, McKinnon says that they should scream, loud enough so that they attract attention so a responsible adult knows what's going on.
More safety tips include:
Designating one house on the block as a "safe house." This is a place where students can go if they feel threatened. Parents should designate a "password" with their children, so that if a stranger approaches, the children will know they're safe. Car pool if possible. Having an adult drive the kids, or at least walk with them gives them one added layer of protection.
