Former Chief: Community Must Stop Violence
McKinnon Urges Teamwork To Combat School Problems
DETROIT, Updated 8:33 a.m. EDT August 29, 2000-- While students try to concentrate on their studies, the threat of violence is unfortunately always possible.

With Tuesday being the first day of classes in Detroit and other local districts, News 4 safety expert Isaiah "Ike" McKinnon, Detroit's former police chief, has tips on how your kids can stay safe in school.

McKinnon says that if students see a weapon at school, they should contact a teacher or administrator immediately.

He also urges parents to get involved, and tells students they need to work with their parents and teachers to keep themselves safe. McKinnon believes that the community needs to see violence as a problem and that everyone needs to work together with themselves and the police.
